Himachal Pradesh polls: Campaigning ends today

Shimla: Top leaders from the Congress and ruling BJP will put their best foot forward in convincing the voters in this hilly state as campaigning ends on Friday for the crucial Assembly elections scheduled for Sunday.

As per reports, senior BJP leader and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley willtry to woo voters in Shimla while Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal will be reaching out to voters in Kangra.

Congress stalwart and former chief minister Virbhadra Singh, facing graft charges, will be holding public meetings in Kullu and Bilaspur.

All 68 constituencies in the state will be voting in a single phase. The results will be declared on December 20. Sixty companies of central paramilitary forces will be deployed on polling day.

The Congress had, on Thursday, alleged that unemployment in the state had shot up during the BJP’s rule and that the Dhumal government had given the land mafia a free run.

Newspaper advertisements too have been a bone of contention between the Congress and the BJP. The Congress is crying foul over advertisements put out by the Dhumal government listing its achievements.

Modi attacks PM Call as ‘maun’ Mohan Singh

Himachal Pradesh Election News 29 October 2012 Modi attacks Congress, calls PM ‘maun’ Mohan Singh: Modi attacks Congress, calls PM ‘maun’ Mohan Singh

Modi took a dig at the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, calling him ‘Maun’ (which means silence) Mohan Singh, in an apparent reference to his lack of response over issues.
Addressing the crowds, the Gujarat CM said that the Congress would be decimated in Himachal Pradesh.
aun Mohan Singh broke his silence only in Himachal Pradesh yesterday. He should have spoken on price rise and said that he failed at controlling them and that he will try to bring them down,” Modi said during his rally, adding that he would have been happy if the PM and Congress President Sonia Gandhi had “thought about the poor.”

Virbhadra to contest HP assembly poll

New Delhi: Former Union Minister Virbhadra Singh, who has been made the Congress chief in Himachal Pradesh, on Tuesday said he would contest the upcoming Assembly elections and try to put up a united fight against BJP, notwithstanding the factionalism within.

He would contest the assembly elections to make his campaign sound serious and did not rule out his case for Chief Ministership.

“My priority is to fight the BJP and oust them from power as it has been the most corrupt government in North India…My first job would be to put an end to this entire factionalism and present the party as one and unitedly fight the BJP,” the 78-year-old five-time former Chief minister, who has never lost an election, told PTI in an interview.

Admitting to factionalism in the party, Singh said it existed in every political party across the country and was not new to the state even though he admitted that it has never been so strong in the past.

“It is nothing new. In any party, there is some sort of factionalism that exists. Himachal Pradesh also has been plagued by it for many decades but it has never been so strong as to disrupt the functioning of the party or to sort of jeopardise the interests of the party,” he said.

He expressed the hope that a majority of the party leaders will respond positively to his call for unity even though he did not rule out that some of them may still not toe the line.

“I am sure at least 99 per cent of the party will respond to my move and give a positive response. I can’t say about one per cent but that does not matter,” he said.
