Gujarat polls 2012: Nitish Kumar to campaign against Narendra Modi

New Delhi: Janata Dal (United) chief Sharad Yadav on Monday said that his party would contest alone in the Gujarat Assembly polls scheduled to be held at the end of this year.

Yadav, who was asked to comment on the plans of the Janata Dal (United) to contest the Gujarat Assembly polls, said his party never had an alliance with the BJP in Gujarat.

“We have an alliance in Bihar, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Karnataka. We earlier had an alliance in Uttar Pradesh. We never had an alliance in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat,” he said.

According to reports, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is likely to campaign in the run-up to the Gujarat Assembly elections for his party, the Janata Dal (United).

The Gujarat unit of the JD (U) plans to contest around 100 seats out of the 182 in the forthcoming Assembly elections.

Many speculate it to be a direct confrontation between Kumar and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who have so far been involved in a long running war of words over the future Prime Minister of the country in case the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) returns to power at the Centre in 2014.

The Janata Dal (United) chief further said the BJP would take a final call on the prime ministerial candidate prior to the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

“Bal Thackeray is a senior leader and has his own viewpoints. Several others gave their opinion on the prime ministerial candidate prior to him. The Lok Sabha polls are quite far now and the elections are not going to take place before that,” said Yadav.
“The BJP will decide the name of PM candidate after being a single largest party in the 2014 general election. Thereafter, it will hold discussions within the NDA,” he added.

Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray on Sunday said that senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj will be a ‘deserving and great choice’ for the Prime Minister’s post.

Thackeray’s comments were part of an interview that appeared in his party mouthpiece, Saamna.

Responding to who would be the ideal choice for the Prime Minister’s job from the BJP, Thackeray said: “At present, there is only one person who is intelligent, brilliant – Sushma Swaraj.”

“I have said this many times…She would be a great choice for PM’s post. She is a deserving, intelligent woman. She would deliver a great performance,” he added.

Thackeray’s comments come in the wake of his recent meeting with Swaraj as part of her party’s campaign against the Centre over the coal block allocation controversy.

JD-U will fight Assembly Polls in Gujarat

New Delhi: Carrying further its reservations over Narendra Modi, the JD-U, which runs a coalition with BJP in BIhar, has decided to contest assembly elections in Gujarat on its own.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, whose antipathy to Modi is well known, will also campaign for the JD-U candidates in Gujarat, where elections are due this year end.

Giving indications of the party’s plans, JD-U President Sharad Yadav told reporters “BJP is the larger party in the NDA. We will go for alliance with BJP wherever it wants us, but barring in Gujarat”.

He was replying to a question whether JD-U contesting elections separately in a state ruled by BJP will not give impression of a rift in the NDA.

Both party chief Sharad Yadav as well as Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will campaign in Gujrat aggravating further the strains between Kumar and Modi that have come to the fore on more than one occasion.

Yadav, however, sought to downplay the development by maintaining that the JD-U never had an alliance with the BJP in Gujarat.

He refrained from answering repeated queries on why the JD-U is making an exception of Gujarat when it is ready to contest with BJP in alliance in all other states.

Yadav also refused to specify how many seats his party wants to contest in Gujarat saying it is for the state unit to decide.

There is speculation that the JD(U) state unit plans to contest 100 out of the 182 assembly seats in Gujarat in the coming Assembly elections.

Yadav, however, said, “we have been fighting separately from BJP in Gujarat for a long time. We are as a part of the NDA alliance in many states, while in many others like Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi, we fight separately. There was never an alliance in Gujarat.”

To a specific query whether the Bihar Chief Minister will go to campaign for JD-U candidates in Gujarat this time, Yadav said that Kumar and he himself as well as a large number ministers of Bihar government had gone to campaign for the party candidates in last Gujarat assembly elections as well.

“Both of us (Sharad Yadav and Nitish Kumar) have campaigned there earlier also. We will do it this time as well,” he said.

JD-U, which is the ruling party in Bihar in alliance with BJP for around eight years, has been contesting elections in alliance with that party in Jharkhand and Rajasthan as well. The alliance between the parties in West Bengal and Tamilnadu has been off and on many occasions, Yadav said.

Narendra Modi announces yatra ahead of Guj polls

Ahmedabad: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has decided to embark on a month-long yatra from September 11 in poll-bound Gujarat, which will cover major parts of the state.

Interestingly, the name of Modi’s yatra is Vivekananda Yuva Vikas Yatra, which will begin on the day when spiritual leader Swami Vivekanada made his historic speech at the Chicago Conference of World Religions, 150 years ago.

“The yatra will start from Becharaji temple town of North Gujarat in the presence of former BJP president Rajnath Singh and Rajya Sabha opposition leader Arun Jaitley,” BJP spokesperson Vijay Rupani said.

Becharji has been chosen as a starting point as Maruti will construct its new car plant near the temple town and the yatra will also talk about development of the state, he said.

This is the first major election campaigning exercise being carried out by Modi ahead of elections to be held by the end of this year, after the state’s Congress opposition organised four major yatras.

“As this is the 150th anniversary of Swami Vivekananda speech at the Conference of World Religions, 150 small yatras will also be taken out along with the main yatra to cover all taluka centres and villages possible,” he said.

Earlier, Gujarat Parivartan Party (GPP) president Keshubhai Patel had criticised Modi for using Swami Vivekananda’s name for political gains.

Cong promises free laptops to students in poll-bound Gujarat

Ahmedabad/Rajkot: Continuing with poll promises in the election-bound state, Congress on Tuesday announced it would provide free laptops to every student in Gujarat after class XII.

The party has also promised to “overhaul” the eduction sector in the state, saying that Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi had ruined the education system in the last 10 years.

Congress has also promised reservation in private schools for poor students and 30 per cent fee concession to them.

“If Congress comes to power in the next Assembly elections, we will provide free laptops, build hostels for students in cities, build sports complexes in every taluka of the state and set up a university in tribal areas of the state,” Congress president Arjun Modhvadia said announcing sixth point of “Gujarat People Development Vision-2012″.

“The Congress will also ask private and self-finance schools and colleges to keep reservation for poor students, form a fund called ‘Vidhya Nidhi’, from which they will be given fee concessions of 30 per cent to study in private schools. No schools without playground or library will be given approval,” Modhvadia said.

Earlier, Congress has promised houses to poor and middle- class housewives at concessional rates in urban areas and a plot of land to poor and middle-class women in rural areas.

“In the last 17 years of the BJP rule, the party has turned education into business in the state by promoting institutes in the name of self-finance colleges, where fees are too high and common man cannot afford to educate their children,” Vaghela, who is heading the campaign committee of the state Congress, said.

Announcing sixth point of Congress’ “Gujarat People Development Vision-2012″ former Gujarat deputy chief minister Narhari Amin today said in Rajkot that Congress has planned several schemes to improve the level of education in Gujarat, “which has been ruined by Modi government’s mismanagement”.
Congress will also set up ‘Gujarat Olympic Academy’ (GOA) to produce world-class players and will appoint best coaches in GOA, Amin said.

From tomorrow (Teachers day) Congress would launch a twenty-day drive under ‘Save Education’ and hold various awareness programmes on college campus “to create awareness about Modi government’s failure in improving education in the state,” he said.

Gujarat Poll 2012: Amit Shah may get entry into Gujarat

Former Gujarat Home Minister Amit Shah may finally get to step foot in Gujarat before the assembly elections scheduled later this year. The Supreme Court has indicated that it may allow Shah to enter Gujarat.

Shah is an accused in the Sohrabuddin fake encounter case. The CBI has accused him of playing a key role in the fake encounter that led to the death of Sheikh. Shah was arrested by the CBI but was granted bail by the Supreme Court in October 2010. While granting bail to Shah, the Court had put the condition that he will not enter Gujarat while the trial is on.

During a hearing in the case today, the SC bench comprising justices Aftab Alam and Ranjana Prakash Desai said it would consider allowing former Gujarat Minister Amit Shah, an accused in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case, to enter the state in view of the upcoming Assembly polls but would like the trial of the case to be shifted to Maharashtra.

“That is one aspect. That must come to an end (keeping him outside the state),” the bench said. Shah’s counsel and senior advocate Advocate Ram Jethmalani said he would like to make short oral arguments and will also place written submissions on the issue of bail and transfer of case of the BJP leader.

Jethmalani submitted that Shah should be permitted to be in Gujarat under the surveillance of CBI officials in view of the upcoming assembly elections. “Don’t keep him away from political activities,” he submitted.

Gujarat Assembly campaign: Battle of songs

Ahmedabad: Using music as a weapon in their campaign for coming Assembly polls, Narendra Modi-led BJP and main opposition Congress today released their theme songs.

While the BJP song focuses on “unstoppable” development of Gujarat, the state Congress’s theme ditty, inspired by a song by Veer Narmad, Gujarat’s foremost poet, talks about equality and secularism.

BJP’s theme song was released through Chief Minister Modi’s blog which appeals to visitors to download ‘Unstoppable Gujarat – An ode to a unique journey of development’.

While a CD titled ‘A new prayer song for Mother Gurjari (Gujarat): Hand of Mother Gurjari’, was released by Congress leaders at a press conference here. “This song is a humble effort of Congress to salute the pride of Gujarat and to reflect the commitment of six crore people of the state to unity and development,” Congress said.
Modi’s blog describes the 3.58 minute-long song as “an expression of six-and-half crore Gujaratis for unstoppable development”.

Both parties have promised to follow this up with videos based on the songs. Assembly elections are likely to be held in December.

The Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) on Wednesday announced that it would provide 100 yard plots to landless and homeless families in rural areas of the state, if the party was voted to power during the assembly elections to be held in December this year.

This announcement is part of the Congress’s poll campaign ‘Gujarat Praja Vikas Darshan 2012′. GPCC president Arjun Modhvadia said claimed that the Narendra Modi government was granting hundreds of acres of land to industries at throw away prices.

“But when it came to giving land to the poor and homeless, the BJP government excused itself saying that it did not have land,” he said.

“If the Congress party is voted to power in the coming elections it will allot 100 yard plots to homeless families in rural Gujarat,” the Congress leader announced. He further said that they would also make arrangement for loan upto one lakh for the families to construct homes upto 30 sq mt area. This they would do through tie ups with various banks. The Congress also promised that the loans to these families would be subsidized by 50 per cent by the government.

Earlier, the Congress had promised reduction in value added tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel, proper implementation of six pay commission for government employees and ‘Own dream Home’ scheme for the urban poor.

The ‘own dream home’ scheme got a tremendous response from the women in the state who had queued up for long hours to obtain the forms. According to Congress over 30 lakh forms have been distributed across the eight municipal corporations and 159 municipalities in the state.

Guj polls: Congress campaigning to dethrone Modi

Ahmedabad: Opposition Congress in Gujarat is meticulously carrying out an aggressive and sustained campaign ahead of the state assembly polls, taking up issues affecting people and connecting with the masses by organising various yatras and agitations, which has for the first time put the ruling BJP on the defensive.

Even Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi, who has never bothered to react to statements and promises of state Congress leaders in the run up to December 2012 elections, has had to respond to some of its poll promises.

“Earlier, state leaders of Congress, instead of doing any ground work, used to depend more on virtual campaign through advertisements and press statements and held the hope that charisma of their central leadership will sail them through,” a Congress leader said.

But this time there is a planned meticulous campaign in which state level leaders have actually gone to the people of Gujarat and tried to connect with a large number of people through various yatras and stirs and have taken up real issues affecting them, he said.

“The Congress campaign had started a year ahead of the scheduled date of polls. Our focus of campaign is arrogance of Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi versus democratic values,” Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi said.
We have held a sustained campaign against the issues concerning people, which the present government has failed to tackle like unemployment, corruption, benefits of development not reaching poor and lower middle class and insensitivity of those in power towards problem of common man, Doshi said.

Gujarat Congress President Arjun Modhvadia, election campaign committee chief Shankarsinh Vaghela and leader of opposition Shaktisinh Gohil have not only focused on building of organisational strengths, but in tandem have targeted right areas and sections of the society for the campaign of the party, he said.
