Chennai: A day after backing former Lok Sabha Speaker PA Sangma’s candidature for the Presidency, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Friday asked all parties to “rise above political considerations,” and support the tribal leader for the top job.

“I now appeal to all political parties to rise above political considerations and support Sangma and ensure that he becomes the next President of India,” she said in a statement here.

Jayalalithaa said yesterday that Sangma “not only belongs to a tribal community but is also eminently qualified to be the President of our great nation.”

“During the past 60 years of the Republic of India, while eminent personalities belonging to various communities and diverse walks of life have graced the office of the Rashtrapati, no one belonging to a tribal community has had the opportunity so far,” she had said.

Jayalalithaa had held consultations with her Odisha counterpart Naveen Patnaik besides within her party before announcing her support to Sangma, who himself had called on her on May 15.

Sangma as Prez: Will Amma’s wish come true?

Posted by alok on May-18-2012

New Delhi: Although J Jayalalithaa-led AIADMK and BJD chief Naveen Patnaik have expressed support for PA Sangma as the next President of the country, the former Lok Sabha Speaker is not likely to be endorsed by other political players in the presidential race.

Reports, Friday, claimed that both BJP and NCP led by Sharad Pawar are not impressed with AIADMK and BJD’s decision to support PA Sangma for President.

While NCP had virtually disowned attempts by its leader Sangma to enter the Presidential race, BJP is also not like to rally behind the former Lok Sabha Speaker.

“I am not aware of any such development. Sangma has not spoken to us. We have had no discussions. We feel that with such a limited strength, we cannot aspire for such a major post,” party chief and Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar told reporters last night.

Sangma, who reportedly met NCP chief this morning, said the NCP leader told him that the party is part of UPA and his stand on the issue will be consistent with it.

At the same time, Pawar today said NCP party leaders would discuss all suggestions given by Sangma.

On his part, Sangma explained to him that he was part of a forum which was pushing for a tribal leader to become the next President.

Pawar’s party is a key ally of the Congress-led UPA at the Centre since May 2004 and the two parties are also sharing power in Maharashtra since 2009. He had sometimes back met Congress President Sonia Gandhi, who has been holding consultations with UPA constituents and allies over the Presidential election.

Meanwhile reacting to the development, the main opposition BJP said that it will take a call on the candidature for the top post and is unlikely to support Sangma.

Sangma had earlier met the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj and her Rajya Sabha counterpart Arun Jaitley. However, the main opposition party is yet to clear its stand on the issue.

The reaction from NCP and BJP comes a day after Odisha Chief Minister and BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik added a new twist to the presidential race by supporting the candidature of the 65-year-old tribal leader from the north eastern state of Meghalaya for the post of President of India.

New Delhi: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar pulled up party leader and former Lok Sabha speaker PA Sangma for projecting himself as a Presidential candidate. This came a day after the BJD and AIADMK supported the candidature of the former Lok Sabha speaker.
The NCP had made it clear that the party couldn’t aspire for such a big post as it didn’t have the numbers.
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had said that the BJD and the Jayalalithaa-led AIADMK would support PA Sangma. Patnaik’s announcement followed his meeting with AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa in Chennai. The former Lok Sabha speaker had met Jayalalithaa three days ago.
Jayalalithaa said, “Following a letter I received from PA Sangma and his recent meeting with me in Chennai on May 15, after due consideration and consultations within the AIADMK as well as consultations with Naveen Patnaik, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has decided to support the candidature of Shri PA Sangma, former Lok Sabha Speaker, for the highest office of the Republic of India.”
Sangma had demanded that the President must hail from the Scheduled Tribes community. He had said that a request in this regard had also been sent to the leaders of the parties.

“I am glad that Naveen Patnaik and Jayalalitha have come out in my support. I am meeting all political parties. We want a tribal President. Pranab Mukherjee is competent but time has come for a President from the Scheduled Tribes community,” said Sangma.
It has been 60 years, there has been president from all communities but ours. We have sent request to leaders of all parties seeking for appointment,” said the North East NCP strongman.
The Congress, meanwhile, has still not come out clear on the party’s choice for the Presidential candidate. Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Vice President Hamid Ansari are the two names that have been doing the rounds as the Congress’s preferred Presidential candidates.
However, there hasn’t been any clarity. Pranab Mukherjee himself has been mincing words when asked about his candidature for the President’s post.
The race for the President is fast heating up with new twists even as Pratibha Patil’s as the President ends in July this year.

‘Why was I in focus when Rekha took oath?’

Posted by alok on May-17-2012

New Delhi: Politics seems to have entered Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan’s personal sphere, in the literal sense, as she is peeved with the Rajya Sabha TV coverage while actress Rekha was taking oath as a member of the upper house.

The Samajwadi Party MP complained to Rajya Sabha chairman and Vice President Hamid Ansari about her being focused frequently by the state run channel while Rekha was taking oath.

The Samajwadi Party MP told Ansari that she felt hurt by the way Rajya Sabha TV kept cutting to her when Rekha was taking oath.

Following her complain, Ansari called Rajya Sabha TV CEO and asked him to explain about the footage.

Jaya Bachchan is the wife of Bollywood superstar Amitah Bachchan. The legendary star was reportedly having an affair with Rekha in the 1970s, and hence all the animosity!

Rekha takes oath as Rajya Sabha MP

Posted by alok on May-15-2012

New Delhi: Cine superstar Rekha on Tuesday took oath as a member of the Rajya Sabha, becoming yet another
personality from the tinsel town to enter the portals of Parliament.
Clad in golden brown saree and a matching high-heel sandals, the 57-year-old actor of yesteryears arrived in the Upper House at 10.57 hours and was immediately surrounded by members who greeted her profusely.
Renowned journalist and nominated member H.K. Dua offered her his seat no. 97 and was seen explaining the procedure before Chairman Hamid Ansari took his seat.
She was greeted with thumping of desk when her name was called for taking oath. “I Rekha Ganeshan” she said, swearing in the name of God in her brief oath in English.
Ansari remarked “welcome” as she walked up to him after taking oath and greeted him with folded hands.
After signing the member register, she greeted Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Leader of the Opposition Arun Jaitley and other leaders before walking to her alloted seat no. 99.

Her ‘Silsila’ rival, Jaya Bachchan (SP), who entered the House before her, occupied her new seat and was engrossed in the day’s agenda and the two ladies of Bollywood did not greet
each other.
Rekha, seated next to Anu Aga (Nom), put on headphones as the House took up listed questions. In between she exchanged notes with Javed Akhtar.
Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi was among those who greeted her before the House began.
Nineteen minutes and 23 seconds into the proceedings, Rekha stood up, shook hands with Aga and Dua before making a quiet exit from the House.
Rekha, who was nominated to the Upper House on April 26 along with Sachin Tendulkar, met the Chairman and the Prime Minister in Parliament before taking oath.
There was excitement outside Parliament House and in the corridors as the Bollywood star of the 80s arrived. News camerapersons ran towards her vehicle as it arrived near the main entrance of Parliament.
Amid chaotic scenes at the entrance, Rekha was taken to the special entrance gate used by the Prime Minister.
Accompanied by the Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Rajiv Shukla, she met the Rajya Sabha Chairman. She was then taken to the office of the Prime Minister, who is the Leader of the Rajya Sabha.
Born on October 10, 1954, Rekha, whose original name was Bhanurekha Ganesan had begun her film career at the tender age of 12 and acted as as child actress in the Telugu movie ‘Rangula Ratnam’.
At the age of 16, she made her debut in Hindi film ‘Sawan Bhadon’ in 1970 in which she was cast in the lead role. Rekha, who has acted in around 180 films in her film career spanning four decades, got national and international acclaim with her films like Umrao Jaan, Silsila, Aastha and Kama Sutra, a foreign production directed by Mira Nair.
Tendulkar is expected to take oath as a Rajya Sabha member on Wednesday. The terms of both Rekha and Tendulkar as Rajya Sabha members began on April 27.
Welcoming Rekha to the Rajya Sabha, RJD chief Lalu Prasad said, “Rekha is a great artist, we welcome her into our fraternity.”
Former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh on Tuesday refused to comment on reports of SP MP Jaya Bachchan’s demand to change her seat in Rajya Sabha after Bollywood actress Rekha’s nomination to the Upper House, saying it was her own ‘Silsila’.
“I don’t want to say anything on why Jaya Bachchan changed her seat. It’s her own ‘Silsila’. Amitabh Bachchan is my friend and have seen Rekha in his films. I congratulated her when I met her today. I don’t have any personal equation with her though,” Amar Singh told reporters.

Ahmedabad: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi may find the going tough for the upcoming assembly elections as his predecessor and BJP warhorse, Keshubhai Patel, is mobilising politically influential Patel community which can tilt the power balance in the state.

The 82-year-old Modi-baiter, who remained in political wilderness for over four years, has not only embarked on to attending public meetings and functions, mainly organised by his community, but also been openly criticising Modi, while pitching for the change of current government.

From the beginning of this year, the BJP stalwart, who was unceremoniously removed from the chief minister’s chair and replaced by Modi in 2001, has attended more than four major public gatherings and openly voiced his thoughts against the chief minister.

Patels, who constitute about 18 percent of state population, shifted their loyalty to BJP in Gujarat after former Congress chief minister Madhavsinh Solanki worked out a KHAM (Kshatriyas, Harijans, Adivasi (tribals) and Muslims) formula to politically alienate the powerful community.

Patels were the backbone of BJP’s successive victories in the state elections.

In the run-up to 2007 elections Keshubhai Patel had initially taken a tough stand against Modi, however, he relented only after intervention and promises from party’s top leadership, sources close to Patel said.

“However, those promises have not been kept either by the top leadership or by Modi so he (Patel) was lying low so far,” they said.

“However, this time he is determined to take the fight to its logical conclusion,” they added.

Among other promises, Patel was purportedly assured of giving ticket to his son in 2007 assembly polls.

The determination to put Modi on mat is palpable in Patel as apart from attending public meetings, the former chief minister has also been networking with leaders like Gordhan Zadafia, who has openly revolted against Modi and formed his own outfit, Maha Gujarat Janta Party (MJP).

In absence of strong and credible opposition in Gujarat, Patel’s campaign against Modi is emerging a major factor in the run-up to the elections due in December this year.

In a recent public meeting Patel said that his community was “living in fear under the present regime of Modi”.
Blurting out a popular catch-line of an advertisement, Patel said that “Dar ke agey jeet hai (victory is yours if you overcome fear); we require to hold our nerves”.

Underlining the sentiment, Zadafia, who fell out with Modi, said, “Keshubhai has nothing personal to gain that is why he is taking on the present regime. He is coming out as a statesman to help people who are finding themselves in trouble”.

The founder president of Maha Gujarat Janta Party further said that “Keshubhai’s word matters not only in his community but among many others as he has spent 60 years in public life of Gujarat. He is still active and meeting people by touring all over the state”.

State BJP president RC Faldu refused to comment on the Keshubhai Patel ‘factor’ and the consequences, if any, on Modi’s future prospects.

BJP welcomes Mamata’s comments on early polls

Posted by alok on May-12-2012

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party has welcomed UPA ally and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee’s comments on early general elections. The Trinamool Congress Chief sparked speculation of early elections when she was addressing her party workers in Kolkata on Friday.

Reacting to Mamata’s comments, BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said, “Mamata Banerjee should get rid of this government. She has hinted at early polls in 2013. The BJP wants the elections to take place in 2012 itself. The sooner this government leaves, the better it will be.”

Earlier on Friday, Mamata had said that she’d heard that a party in Delhi had held a meeting to advance the Lok Sabha elections by one year to 2013.

“Anyday, we can face election. We have to remain ready,” she said.

“One party has held a meeting to hold the election in advance, though my information may not be correct,” Banerjee told a meeting of Trinamool Congress without naming the party.

“I have got the information. I am not going into details as to who were at the meeting. They deliberated on advancing the Lok Sabha election to 2013,” she said.

Banerjee turned to her close aide and Railway Minister and said “what Mukul? Wasn’t the the meeting held?

Mamata’s claim contradicts the UPA’s stand that elections won’t be advanced.
